Hermann-Josef Kuhna

Professor Hermann-Josef Kuhna (*1944, † 2018) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and himself taught as a professor at the Kunstakademie Münster, by which point he was already known throughout Germany for his work as an artist.

This renowned artist’s early work is characterized by extensive and at times objective painting. Back then, the defining feature of his work was a consistency in color and shape. His later work was marked by a different intention, focusing entirely on color: always clear, glowing, and able to speak for itself. Color as vibrating energy! The expressive design of color was this artist’s main interest. He himself spoke of the liberation of color, and designated his art ‘structural painting’.

“[...] my strength lies in doing away with literary moments. I can say much more with mood, atmosphere, and color than with symbols.” – Hermann-Josef Kuhna
