About Mimmo Paladino

Mimmo Paladino (1948, Paduli, Italy) is an Italian painter, sculptor and graphic artist. He lives and works in Rome, Paduli and Puglia. Together with Sandro Chia , among others, he is one of the representatives of the Transavantgarde , an Italian art movement with affinities to German Neo-Expressionism . After his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1980, the artist achieved international fame. Works by Mimmo Paladino are in important public collections, including the Tate in London, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, the Neue Galerie in Berlin, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Paladino's works show references to a whole range of artistic traditions and iconographies. References to antiquity as well as to modernity can be discerned. For example, Paladino's depictions of de-individualized persons or heads show a direct reference to similar depictions of heads found in modernist art of the 1920s or 1930s.
