Günther Förg

Günther Förg (1952–2013) is a well-known exponent of “concrete art”. He studied at Munich’s Academy of Fine Art, where he later taught as a professor of art. In 1992 this acclaimed artist had the distinction of exhibiting at documenta IX, and in 1996 he was the recipient of the Museum Ludwig’s prestigious Wolfgang Hahn Prize. Günther Förg was also a sculptor and was inspired by twentieth-century modernist buildings. From the 1990s Förg primarily focused on painting in the style of concrete art and created impressive lattice and grid images, a style that made him famous. The geometric structures that can be recognized in these images reflect his affinity for architecture. Förg was also passionate about forest painting.
