About Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns (*1930, Augusta, Georgia) went down in art history as a graphic artist, sculptor and painter of flags, targets, numbers, light bulbs and maps. Beginning in 1955, he established a new iconography with these motifs and expanded American Abstract Expressionism in the direction of Pop Art . Works by Jasper Johns regularly fetch prices in the millions at auction. Johns' works are sometimes enigmatic and playful, questioning the way we interpret and see reality. Johns blurred the previous distinction between fine art and mass culture by artistically processing newspaper clippings and mass-produced items such as beer and coffee cans.
The artist has been honored with numerous awards. In 2018, the New York Times called Jasper Johns "the most important living artist in the United States." "One hopes that something resembling truth, a sense of life, even grace, at least flickers in my work." - Jasper Johns View works of Pop Art
