Rupprecht Geiger

Rupprecht Geiger (1908–2009) was one of the main exponents of German color field painting. The abstract and color-intensive compositions he experimented with made the artist famous back in the 1950s. From 1965 to 1976 Geiger was professor for painting at the prestigious Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Since then his works have enjoyed international acclaim. Rupprecht Geiger dedicated himself to the autonomy and detachment of color from shape, and worked principally with basic geometric shapes like circles, ovals, squares, and rectangles. His examination of the color red in its many nuances is characteristic of Geiger’s works: “ Red is life, energy, potency, strength, love, warmth, power.
